World Music: Izaline Calister, "Mi Pais"
(Curaçao) Izaline Calister’s performance in Link TV's presentation of "Breaking the Silence, Beating the Drum" was special, and we have since wanted a video of this very warm, artful singer. Now we have one, albeit courtesy of the Curacao Board of Tourism. So although the lyric is not all sweetness and light ("My country knows about poverty, robbery, diseases...") we are still treated to the enticing sunlit vistas, sparkling water, and clean-as-a-whistle pastel facades. Even the line "...and some who are good for nothing" underscores not a person, but an iguana! The song is lovely and thoughtful, however, and Izaline's intimate rendition is in Papiamentu, the language of the island.
