What is life? Do we need to define it on order to study its origins? What does it even mean "to define" something? For scientists in more established fields, such as physics or chemistry, these questions are nice to ponder in an armchair by a toasty fire â€" away from one’s research. However, for the emerging field of astrobiology, the search for life in the universe seems to blur the lines between hard science and armchair philosophy. Or does it? In "Spaced Out," chemists and philosophers from Montana State University's astrobiology research group share their perspectives on the issue.
