Painting Present: David Reed
The second in a series which explores the condition of painting now.29.10.2002 The second in a series which explores the condition of painting now.Leading American artist David Reed talked about his work, which has sought out new directions for contemporary painting. His gestural mark-making relates to Abstract Expressionism and Postminimalism, but also to Mannerist and Baroque painting. The vibrantly-coloured swirling forms repeated across the surface of Reed’s works recall handmade gestures and, simultaneously, reproductions of such gestures. His palette evokes the technological light emanating from televisions, monitors, and movie screens. Reed has also made installations using film and video to explore the place of painting in our culture, such as a computer-generated montage to incorporate his own paintings into scenes from Hitchcock films.Painting Present is a collaboration between Tate Modern and the MA in Fine Art at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design bringing to London major figures working in or on painting to explore contemporary issues around this media.
