Haiti: One Year after the Earthquake
CPAC Special Haiti: One Year after the EarthquakeOne year ago, tragedy literally shook Haiti, in the form of an earthquake that killed more than 200,000 people and destroyed much of Port-au-Prince. Haitian-Canadians mourned lost loved ones. The federal government matched the relief donations offered by people across the country. Two thousand troops deployed to Haiti, and orphaned children were given new homes in Canada. Today, more than one million Haitians remain homeless. A cholera epidemic has added to the misery, as has last year’s disputed presidential election. Join CPAC for interviews with Haitian-Canadians as they reflect on the past year, including those attending a memorial Mass at Ottawa’s Notre-Dame Cathedral. Jointly organized by the Haitian Embassy and the Church of Ottawa, the event brought together nearly 750 people determined to highlight the courage of the Haitian people. Pierre Donais meets with different members of the Haitian community as well as several Canadians marking this sad anniversary. Among his guests are Nathalie Gissel-Ménos, chargée d’affaires at Haiti’s embassy in Ottawa, Pierre Beaudet, professor of international development and cooperation at the University of Ottawa, Marlène Chouloute Hyppolite, from the organization Groupe de réflexion et d’action pour une Haïti nouvelle (GRAHN) à Ottawa, Jean St-Vil, founding member of AKASAN (Aysyen ki pap soutni Aysyen nètalkole), Darlène Lozis, president of UNHO (Union des Haïtiens d’Ottawa-Gatineau), and Benoît Bégin, President of Solidarité-Haïti.
