iReport — CNN Ireporters Al & Roberta Mealey covered the public memorial service for the former First Lady Betty Ford today at St Margaret’s Episcopal Church in Palm Desert, CA. Elisabeth Bloomer Ford, the widow of former President Gerald Ford, passed away on July 8 in Rancho Mirage, CA of natural causes. The champion and advocate for breast cancer and addiction was 93 years old. There were no cameras allowed at the church, and the only way in was by shuttle bus. This wonderful woman touched a lot of female's hearts, judging by the mostly female crowds. It was Betty Ford that made addiction and treatment of alcohol and other addictions a public concern when she opened the Betty Ford Rehab Center at the world famous Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage, CA. An endless list of celebs, athletes, and even the 'Average Joe' have been successfully treated there. She was also a major advocate for woman with breast cancer. She brought the disease 'out of the closet'. She was one of the great First Lady's, a nation will dearly miss her. May God bless her soul, she is with her husband Gerald now.
