สรรพสัตว์ทั้งหลายก็ปรารถนาความสุข ไม่ปรารถนาความทุกข์จึงแสวงหาความสุข แสวงหาความหลุดพ้นจากความทุกข์ ทั้ง ๆ ที่หนทางที่แท้จริงที่จะเข้าถึงสิ่งเหล่านี้ได้นั้นอยู่ที่ตรงไหน จะเข้าถึงอย่างไรก็ไม่ทราบ ต่อมาเมื่อสมเด็จพระสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้าเสด็จอุบัติขึ้นในโลก แล้วทรงชี้แจงแสดงธรรมให้สรรพสัตว์ทั้งหลายได้เห็นแจ้ง ในหนทางแห่งความดี ด้วยการให้ทาน รักษาศีล เจริญภาวนาเป็นต้น
