World Music: Wasis Diop, "Automobile, mobile"
(Senegal/France) Wasis Diop grew up in Dakar, Senegal, and his video is full of images of the city from the 1969 film "Badou Boy" by director Djibril Diop Mambety, who was also Wasis' brother. Diop starred in the film as a boy. Now as a man, he sees Dakar then and Dakar now as the same, trapped in globalization’s relentless march. He sings of the way that automobiles choke the streets while the video reflects this with scenes of traffic jams and crowds that foreshadow the ever growing urban population in Senegal. Diop himself is now older than his brother was when he died; it's a place in life that calls for reflection, and the passing on of wisdom acquired since the time when both brothers made a film; one in front of the camera, the other behind it.Visit Wasis Diop on Myspace
