Unrest in Iran - The End of Ahmadinejad’s Presidency? Since the disputed presidential elections in Iran, opposition supporters have held daily demonstrations against the government in a number of major cities throughout the country. The demonstrators accuse the government of rigging the vote to ensure a second term for incumbent president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who is considered a radical. The violence is escalating. Security forces have dealt brutally with the demonstrators. So far, seven protestors have been killed and many others injured.   The regime is using every means to defend itself against the protests. A number of opposition leaders have been arrested. Domestic and foreign media have been subject to stricter forms of censorship than ever before. The Internet and mobile phone networks have been partially blocked. Opposition leader Mirhossein Mousavi is trying to prevent further bloodshed by calling on his supporters not hold any more protest marches or rallies for the time being. But the opponents of the regime are continuing to demonstrate - despite an official ban on public assembly. The situation is difficult to assess accurately, especially since the Iranian government has prevented foreign media from reporting from the streets. Correspondents are only permitted to report from their offices. Interviews with eyewitnesses are also prohibited. But important information is continuing to trickle out of Iran via the Internet. There are already some signs that the Iranian leadership has been unsettled by the protests. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as Supreme Leader the country's most powerful man, has promised to review the disputed election results. Initially, he had congratulated Ahmadinejad for winning. Khamenei has so far refused to countenance fresh elections and some believe that the Iranian leadership is hoping that small concession will break the will of the demonstrators.
