Melting economy is the key election issue
David Cameron, Conservative party leader, "Our economy is stuck in a rut." Nick Clegg Liberal Democrat Party leader, "We need to do things differently to build a new stronger, fairer economy." Gordon Brown, Prime Minister and Labour party leader, "Economies in Europe are in peril." It’s the economy, stupid! The issue that's dominated the general election campaign and the focus of the third and final television debate between the three main party leaders Britain's debt is currently running at 890 billion pounds two thirds of the country's annual output and over the past 12 months the finance minister Alistair Darling borrowed a further 152 billion in an attempt to stimulate the economy. After the election that debt will have to be paid back to the tune of around 71 billion a year. But how and when is the big question. If Labour are re-elected, they will put off spending cuts and tax rises until 2011 to safeguard the recovery from the recession.
