Related update 9/16/08: "HDV vs. DV Evaluation for S8mm Telecine" at The "Automatic S8mm Transfer System" was developed for archiving our 10,000 feet of family movie film taken from 1967 - 1983. The unique feature of the system is extensive software processing used solely to improve the image quality beyond the original “Screen and Projector” viewing experience. Sorry film purists. Lengthy processing times were accepted as long as once each processing step was initiated, it required no further operator intervention. This is the “automatic” aspect. Budget was limited to “hobby-level” add-ons (telecine projector and software) that leveraged capital equipment (camera, NLE system) already owned by my small, boutique video production business. DIY entailed selecting and optimizing the use of off-the-shelf hardware and software (that are fully credited). All the processing steps target final viewing on a 50+" HD screen fed by 720X480 MPEG-2 from a DVD or BluRay encoded at a high bitrate. Image quality of the current system is limited mostly by using DV capture vs. using uncompressed HD capture via the cameras HDMI port. This would require a newer, more costly NLE system. VIMEO VIEWING: For best critical viewing here, use "Full Screen / HD On" - if your system is fast enough. Otherwise select "HD Off". NOTE: "HD On" as used here does not provide the "expected" Vimeo HD quality. The quality is upconverted SD that simply takes good advantage of the higher resolution file sizes Vimeo uses to display HD. Film grain should be clearly visable in the "Raw" split screen.
