Location of APS' Westside Stadium approved
The months-long outcry from residents over the construction of a new APS sports complex on the Westside didn’t do much to stop the school board from approving it Wednesday night. "We found out about this two weeks ago, we were the only people who found out about it. It was very short very quick and that really upset people," said Tommy Borst. Vic Segura, who lives near the proposed location, says not all are upset with the project. "I'm supporting it because the issue is that we have to look at economic development for the Westside," he said. Andres Lazo who attended the meeting says he wants the stadium built in the southwest part of town at Atrisco Heritage—the site that was originally considered by APS. "It seems like there's some disagreement on the northwest side of Albuquerque. A lot of the neighborhoods actually don't want the stadium in their own neighborhood, but the South Valley would love to have it," said Lazo. In one of her last acts as a board member Dolores Griego, also from the South Valley, voted against the Westside site. "What I don't like is that our community was lied to. They were given hope and they got the rug pulled out from under them," said Griego. Robert Lucero, who is also leaving the board, says there could be a giant buffer zone of soccer and softball fields between neighbors and the new stadium if the City of Albuquerque considers partnering with APS to buy an abutting parcel of land. He says it's a good thing for the area. "Having hundreds of homes built in that area is going to add more traffic than a stadium that's going to have game or two on the weekends, and only in football season," said Lucero. Board members say they're going to listen to residents throughout this entire process, although citizens at Wednesday night's meeting say their voices haven't been heard.
