Select Committee - Fuel Economy in Automobiles - 206201-1-DVD - Select Committee for Energy Independence and Global Warming.  A hearing was held to examine the fuel economy standards proposed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in response to the enactment of the Energy Independence and Security Act (EISA) of 2007. EISA requires that mileage standards reach 35 miles per gallon (mpg) by 2020. The first witness, testifying on behalf of the Bush Administration, stated that based on studies conducted by the Department of Transportation and EPA, the Administration proposes raising standards to 31.6 mpg by 2015. Committe Chairman Markey stated that the figures used in the studies were flawed, as the analysis used a projection cost of .42 per gallon of gas in 2016 when the current cost per gallon is over 50 percent higher. Witnesses on the second panel testified on the possibilities for electric cars.
