World Music: DDT, "Lyubov"
-Buy the album(Russia) In looking back on the history of Russian popular music, we can see a definite "Golden Age" of Rock bands that grew up under Communism, weathered perestroika, and are now, ironically considered the "alternative" to the commercial pablum that currently dominates the airwaves there. DDT is such a band, and their brand of rock and roll is distinctively Russian --in music to a degree, but in soul, completely. The heart of the band is poet Yuri Shevchuk, who is also possessed of a perfect rock voice complete with just the right amount of rasp. "Lyubov" (love) is a fever dream of transformation, from black and white reality to Technicolor possibilities.
