Each year, about 70 golden eagles are killed by the rotating blades of Altamont Pass’s nearly 5,000 wind turbines. The birds and the perils they face embody the complex issues facing wildlife authorities, wind-farm companies and regulatory agencies as they push for renewable energy development.
