Pearl Report - 明珠檔案 - Rocky Treasures - 2009-01-04
Rocks and fossils dating back millions of years and the only acidic hexagonal volcanic rock columns in the world, can all be found in the eastern part of the New Territories. But many people are oblivious to these Hong Kong treasures. Some say they are the last pure land masses here. Now, the government wants to preserve these unique features into a national geological park, and ultimate apply for it to be listed a world heritage, like Yellowstone National Park and the old town of Liqiang in Yunnan. It hopes it will become a new landmark for HK. There’re 10 of these rare geological sites, covering 4% of Hong Kong. It's no man's land from the High Island reservoir to the Ninepin group. The government proposals has sparked controversy. Organisers of ecological tour groups are quick to support a geopark; while geologists and conservationists oppose it on the grounds that it lacks planning and long-term conservation goals. So how should the geopark be developed? And how to strike a balance?
