When Will I Be Loved?
Notorious sexual provocateur James Toback (Fingers, The Pick-Up Artist) delivers another ferocious jolt to the senses with When Will I Be Loved, a racy drama that features an eye-opening and bodily revealing performance from Neve Campbell. As in Toback’s Black and White, the film takes place on the harsh streets of New York City, where everybody is out to make a buck and morality appears to have been left behind somewhere in the 20th Century. Campbell is Vera, a spoiled Manhattanite who is dating Ford (Frederick Weller), a shady hustler. It becomes quite clear, however, that Vera is no monogamist, as she flirts with every cute guy that she passes, and also keeps a female lover on the side. When Ford is confronted by Italian billionaire Count Tommaso (Dominic Chianese) and offered $100,000 to spend time with Vera, the cunning vamp takes over and both men learn a very painful lesson about messing with a modern female. Toback's film is another abrasive work that addresses topics most people would rather sweep under the rug. The soundtrack jarringly shifts between hip-hop and classical music, and features cameos from Mike Tyson, Lori Singer, Damon Dash, and Michael Mailer. Shot by acclaimed Steadicam operator Larry McConkey, When Will I Be Loved is certain to polarise audiences.
