Made in Germany Nokia: Plant Closure in Germany
Nokia announced the closure of its Bochum plant on January 15. 2300 Nokia employees will lose their jobs, and a further 2000 suppliers and service providers could be affected. Nokia had received subsidies totalling 88 million euros from the German government, the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and the city of Bochum, but the the duration of the subsidy expired more than a year ago. Nokia has found a new site in Romania and is hoping for new subsidies. Although EU support for the industrial park in Romania is legal, it is still unclear how much of the EU’s generous support for Romania's coffers will be used to subsidise the Nokia factory. That would be illegal. Made in Germany went to Cluj in Romania to talk to those involved, and shows how back in Bochum, the works council and politicians are fighting for the city's future and against 'caravan capitalism'. Report by Vanessa Fischer and Andreas Hewel.
