東日本大震災の影響で、ゴールデンウイークの鉄道の利用が、過去最大の落ち込みとなった。ゴールデンウイーク中のJR東日本管内の新幹線・特急などの乗客は27%減で、JRグループ全体でも11%減となり、民営化後最大の下げ幅となった。
