Food security and politics risks African growth
Africa is recovering from the global financial crisis much faster than much of the rest of the world with growth expected to be twice that in the developed world this year. Professor Mthuli Ncube, chief economist at the African Development Bank, forecasts capital inflows climbing back to 2007 levels, but potential constraints to economic growth include food price inflation, any slowdown in China or political events in individual African states. He adds that the continent needs $45bn annually to meet infrastructure shortfalls which are also holding back progress.
