In Nature’s lap: Meghalaya's living root bridges
Bridges are mostly made of steel, cement-concrete, or at times logs and bamboo, but in the rain forests of Meghalaya living bridges exist. Trees are manicured over decades to form footpaths over wide mountain streams. The tradition is maintained by the local Khasi tribe. Such custom made living bridges are common there, a way of life of the tribals, who have mastered the art of harnessing nature to survive.
