Ryff, Ph.D., University of Wisconsin Burton H. Singer, Ph.D., Princeton University Drs. Ryff and Singer focus on positive health, operationalized with measures of well-being, as more than the absence of disease and illness. A variety of empirical studies show diverse combinations of conditions (sociodemographic factors, life challenges, personal traits, social ties) are associated with high well-being, which in turn, has also shown distinctive biological correlates. Specifying taxonomies of co-occurring conditions (i.e., pathways) requires an integration of diverse sources of evidence across multiple domains and modes of assessment (quantitative and qualitative). Moreover, such complexity must then also be linked with combinations of biomarker responsesthat represent corresponding biological signatures. Their focus will be on how they have worked with these challenges, both conceptually and empirically, in attempting to provide an integrative social and biological portrait of positive health over the life course.
