Spiegel im Spiegel: Winter Afternoon Reflections
Spiegel im Spiegel, the mirror in the mirror. An interesting concept. The reflections in a mirror are reversed. In the second mirror, the reversal is corrected. The images can be distorted, contracted, expanded, or elongated. Almost any visual effect you can imagine can be produced by a mirror. But in spite of all these effects the truth remains that the mirror can only reflect the image of the viewer, and his environment. The principle is called the Angle Of Incidence. When you view a reflection in a mirror, your reflection is also visible. Somewhere in a reflection…. is you. It’s impossible to avoid. And I would like to point out, that almost every surface in the world can at times act like a mirror. So I thought it would be interesting to show a reflection, and to have the viewer create an individual reality. Somewhere in this reflection….is you. The music is Spiegel im Spiegel by Arvo Pärt This is a window pane in our house. I focused on the distortions in the glass. The reflection is of the trees, and the clouds as they drifted by. It was very windy the day I shot this, and this caused the window to shake. The different light , the color and intensity, were caused only by clouds as they hid the sun. It was shot time lapse, one frame second, the focus was set to manual, the shutter was set to 1/30th of a second, and the aperture, called the iris on the TM700 was set to F5.6. I left the white balance set on AWB in the hope that the changing light would be create color shifts. It did.
