Germany and Poland have worked hard to improve their relations since the collapse of communism nearly two decades ago. But an issue going back to the Second World War has once again put a strain in relations between the two neighbors. Tension is simmering over how to commemorate millions of Germans forced out of eastern Europe at the end of the War. The Poles have been closely following plans by the Association of Expellees to set up a commemorative museum in Germany. But they were outraged when conservative politician,Erika Steinbach was nominated to the board of a German federal foundation which will promote the proposed documentation center. The 65-year CDU politician is viewed with deep suspicion by the Poles, who believe she holds revanchist views. In face of the considerable pressure Steinbach has now withdrawn her bid. Although Poland is relieved, many members of Chancellor Angela Merkel’s CDU party are unhappy and say her decision was a result of political blackmail. The issue has divided Germany along party lines and the question when the memorial center will be established remains unresolved.
