Russia: Koryakski Volcano starts Eruptiing
The Koryakski (Klyuchevskaya) Volcano in Eastern Russia, has started spew out hot dangerous gases and ash. The state of the stratovolcano is of serious concern as the area is populated 19th just under 200,000 people nearby at Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky . The Koryakski Volcano is located on the Kamchatka Peninsula at the most north-western edge of the Pacific Ocean. At depths of up to 10,500 metre More..s or 34,000 ft under the ocean and of the east of the peninsula is the Kuril-Kamchatka Trench. This is where the Pacific tectonic plate is slowly grinding beneath the leading edge of the tectonic plate bearing the Russian/Asian continent. (See the Google Earth Image attached or visit the Koryakski Volcano on Google Earth with the link supplied below). The tremendous heat and pressure of this slow-motion collision along the Kuril-Kamchatka Trench (subduction/fault zone) melts rock far below the surface. The magma fuels more than a dozen active volcanoes on Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula. The Koryakski Volcano is also a designated "Decade Volcano". Decade Volcanoes are 16 volcanoes throughout the world that have been identified by the International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth’s Interior (IAVCEI) as being worthy of particular study in light of their history of large, destructive eruptions and proximity to populated areas. The Decade Volcano project encourages studies and public-awareness activities at these volcanoes, with the aim of achieving a better understanding of the volcanoes and the dangers they present, and thus being able to reduce the severity of natural disasters. They are named Decade Volcanoes because the project was initiated as part of the United Nations-sponsored International Decade for Natural Disaster Reduction. A volcano may be designated a Decade Volcano if it exhibits more than one volcanic hazard (people living near the Decade Volcanoes may experience tephra fall, pyroclastic flows, silicic lava flows, lahar...
