Finland – Youth unemployment in the model education country
Young, motivated - and jobless. In Europe, the economic crisis is affecting young people in particular. One in five of them is unemployed. Up till now, a good education was considered a job guarantee, but now Finland, the country that comes tops in education surveys, is faced with high youth joblessness. 23 point 5 percent of its young people have no work — that’s worse than the EU average. The Finnish government expects the problem to get worse over the course of the year. The country is bracing for record figures in the summer, when school leavers throng into the labor market. Made in Germany accompanies a young, well-educated unemployed man to the labor office, to a job interview, and to a meeting with representatives of the government. Report by Joachim Eggers
