Pine Needles over Coal: Clean Air in India through Biomass Briquettes
The forests in the Indian state of Uttarakhand are rich with pine trees and the forest floor is covered in a blanket of needles. Pine needles were considered a wildfire threat but now they’ve become a hot item in the green energy movement. Brothers Briesh and Rajesh Rawat pay residents for each load of pine needles they gather. The two men use them to make biomass briquettes that reduce harmful greenhouse gas emissions and India's dependence on fossil fuels.
