Henry Clay and the Role of Speaker of the House
Speaker of the House Boehner (R-OH) and former Speakers Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Dennis Hastert (R-IL) discussed the legacy of Speaker Clay, their respective times in the position, how the position has changed through the years, and examples of times they have been able to find beneficial compromise. The conversation focused on Clay and the role of speaker of the house, but included comments on issues such as education, the economy, the debt limit, and Medicare. John Harwood moderated. "The Role of the Speaker of the House: A Tribute to Henry Clay" was the culminating event of the first Henry Clay Week in Lexington, Kentucky, held to honoring the 200th anniversary of Henry Clay becoming Speaker of the United States House of Representatives in 1811.
