GLOBAL 3000 Fighting Famine - Young Global Leaders
Every year the World Economic Forum nominates up to 300 outstanding personalities from business, politics, research and culture as Young Global Leaders. All of them are involved in working together for a better world. Global 3000 has interviewed 11 of the innovative thinkers and movers. As well as climate change, they are concerned with topics such as poverty, energy, the global food crisis and leadership styles. The global food crisis is one of the biggest challenges of all time, according to Leslie Maasdorp, financial expert for the British company Barclays Capital in South Africa. He says the growing demand is one of the core reasons for hunger in many countries. As it is not possible to change this trend, he believes the supply should be increased. Massdorp is calling for all countries to work together to achieve sustainable increases in production. Christophe Beck spent 10 years working for the food company Nestlé before moving to Ecolab in the United States. He says the food crisis is a negative effect triggered by what is, in effect, a positive outcome of globalization. After all, it is a good thing that increasing numbers of people can afford to buy more to eat.
