World Music: Renato Borghetti, "Hospitaleira Vacaria"
-Download on iTunes(Brazil) Renato Borghetti is of Italian extraction and hails from Rio Grande do Sul, the southernmost state of Brazil. When we think of Brazil we generally think of Samba, Bossa Nova, and more recently, Forro; but Rio Grande do Sul shares a border with Argentina, giving it’s music the flavor of the tango, as well as the folk music of the gauchos. Borghetti is one of the finest exponents of this mixed culture of European classical, jazz, samba, tango and folk music. He plays the "Gaita Ponto" a small accordion that has the unique characteristic of playing the same note whether the bellows are pulled or pushed. "Hospitaleira Vacaria" is a milonga (a kind of rustic tango) but in this performance with his ensemble, Borghetti not only rips through the tune with fiery bravado, but injects it with myriad of contemporary sensibilities --and fun.
