Bev Shipley
Beyond Politics Conservative MP Bev Shipley was born on the Shipley homestead in a farmhouse located just outside of Denfield, Ontario about 30 minutes from London. The Shipleys have tilled the same soil for many generations and for Bev, the only son, he too, learned to care for the land. Bev farmed for several years and the thought of running for office and becoming a politician had never crossed his mind until one of his neighbours dropped by one day and suggested that he should. Bev did and was elected to the office of reeve when he was only 38. Bev was also elected deputy reeve and even mayor and after almost 20 years Bev felt that he had lost the drive and left political life. But in 2004, Bev was approached to run by the Harper Conservatives in the riding of Lambton-Kent-Middlesex. Bev lost by less than 200 votes. Thinking that he could win the next time, Bev ran again in 2006 and won with a plurality of over 5,000 votes. The father of three and grandfather of 7, Bev has been married to wife Barb for over 38 years. Bev Shipley talks to Catherine Clark about is life Beyond Politics.
