Every Friday morning between November and March, thousands of people flock to the outskirts of Kabul to watch huge mastiffs launch themselves at each other in the ring. Two huge dogs are locked in a bitter struggle. The brown mastiff is named Zamboor, which means “bee,” and it’s one of the best fighting dogs in Kabul. Every Friday morning between November and March, thousands of people flock to a makeshift arena on the outskirts of the city. Zamboor grabs the white dog by the throat and it's all over in seconds. It's won the fight, and thousands of dollars for its owners. Ghulam Yahya, handler of Zamboor, son of owner Haji Ghulam Sakhi, saying, “The other dog was big, and was a famous fighting dog. My dog fought and managed to beat him, thank God, my dog won the fight. I am so happy.” It's a violent sport, the rivalries are intense – and scuffles sometimes erupt between owners. Thousands of dollars ride on the outcome of each fight. The former Taliban regime banned dog fighting because gambling is forbidden under Islam- but the sport is now extremely popular. Noor Agha, spectator, “This Friday, I was invited to a wedding, but I didn't go. Dog fighting is my hobby, and I decided to come here instead.”
