Interview with Claudia Kemfert (DIW), Part two
She is manager of the department of Energy, Transport and Environment at the the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW).DW-TV: Alright, Claudia Kemfert is back with us. Ms. Kemfert, are consumers too cynical or simply too frugal right now? Claudia Kemfert: Well, we have to explain them that there are big chances, it’s not too complicated to live in a climate- friendly way, to order eco electricity or spend money on climate protection, that's not too complicated. DW-TV: You are very positive about making a difference in stopping climate change. Do you think we're going to see success in Copenhagen? Claudia Kemfert: We have to, otherwise it's not acceptable, because right now we are in a very comfortable position, nearly all leaders of the world are willing to go for an agreement and we have to go for it, otherwise it would be a disaster. DW-TV: Isn't that the problem right now? Things are still too comfortable. I mean we have members of parliament in Australia who still say that climate change is a hoax, that it's not happening. Those are the types of people that we have to convince to make a change in Copenhagen. Claudia Kemfert: Well, this is the exemption I would say. There's the USA, there's Europe, there's Germany, there's Japan, there are many countries right now willing to go for a climate agreement. We have to go for, otherwise I would not leave them out of the room. before they go for an agreement. DW-TV: Just very briefly, what happens if no agreement comes in Copenhagen? Claudia Kemfert: It would be a disaster. I would not accept this. I will go personally there and ask them really to go for an agreement because otherwise it's not acceptable. DW-TV: Alright. Well, hopefully you won't have to go to Copenhagen. Hpefully there'll be an agreement. Claudia Kemfert: I will DW-TV: Ms. Kemfert, thank you very much. (Interview: Brent Goff)
