Violent Taxi Cab Robbery
LAS VEGAS - "Here we have an older gentleman, the victim, just trying to make a living," said Metro Police Officer Jay Rivera. "We have this young guy who believes that it’s easy to get money and obviously takes advantage of this victim." The drive ends dangerously. The robber asks for change for a fifty dollar bill. The cab driver pulls out his money. That's when the crook holds a knife More..to the victim's throat. The suspect grabs the cash and runs as the cameras rolled. "The installation of cameras into the cabs has definitely had a big impact on reducing robberies to cab drivers," Officer Rivera said. While cameras may act as a deterrent, some bold bandits steal anyway. On August 15, two young men, also armed with a knife, robbed a cab driver in the southwest part of the valley. They are still at large. Cab drivers are aware of the dangers. "It's a scary job," said one cab driver. "People get into your car. Sometimes, you don't know what they have." They say they take precautions to stay safe. "The cameras actually help a lot," one driver said. "See this button right here? It tells us we can tell the yard that we're in trouble." Crimes against cab drivers are down dramatically, but drivers know the realities. "There's always a threat, and that's part of being a cab driver. We're all aware of what the potential risks are," said cab driver Andrew Gnatovich. The suspect in that robbery is described as a white man in his 20's, about 5'11" tall and weighing 180 pounds.
