World Music: Bireli Lagrène and Friends, "Djangology"
(France) In 1945 saxaphonist Charlie Parker (The Bird) recorded his now classic "Ornithology." Since then, jazzers have been writing songs with "ology" tacked onto the end as a sly tip of the hat. In 1949, gypsy jazz guitarist extraordinaire Django Rheinhardt reunited with violinist Stephan Grapelli, and recorded "Djangology." It may not have been a tip of the hat in quite the same way; although both musicians are considered to be giants in their fields, their musical contributions are quite different. Still, it’s a graceful and swinging tune, and in this rendition Lagrène gives the satin-toned violinist Florin Niculescu plenty of room to shine.
