The State of Ohio - January 21, 2011
Ohioans are showing some serious splits in opinion when it comes to new Gov. John Kasich and the state budget. They don’t want higher taxes, but don't think Gov. Kasich is going to be able to keep his promise not to raise them. The Ohio Supreme Court justice who helped write the state's death penalty law three decades ago now is calling for an end to capital punishment in Ohio. It’s always a big deal when the lines for the districts that state and federal lawmakers represent are redrawn. And this year, it’s especially important – since Ohio is set to lose two seats in Congress. Ohio’s new secretary of state had worked to get rid of the partisan politics in the redrawing of lines – but now that Republicans are firmly in charge, is a bipartisan redistricting process possible – or even a goal? Secretary of State Jon Husted talks about that. And two experts in who’ve worked on redistricting also share their thoughts - Catherine Turcer, legislative director of Ohio Citizen Action and Dan Tokaji, Professor of Law at The Ohio State University's Moritz College of Law and the Associate Director of Election Law @ Moritz.
