Churning of the Sea of Milk (E wall, 3rd gallery) - Siem Riep, Cambodia
The creation story from the Bhagavata-Purana tells of a tightrope race between 88 asura (devils, on the left, holding the 5 heads of the naga snake, Vasuki, starting with the giant multi-headed Ravana) and 92 deva (gods, right, holding its tail, with the monkey god, Hanuman, at the end). In the process they churn the sea around Vishnu (in his tutle avatar) on Mt. Mandara (the central pivot) to extract the elixir of immortality, amrita. Indra flies above to keep the mountain steady. There are 88 days from spring equinox to summer solstice, and 92 from fall equinox to winter solstice. As soon as the amrita was produced, the devas took possession of it, and broke their promise to the asura to give them half, who then tried to steal it from the devas.
