Honey Springs Scenic Tour, Checotah
Site of the largest Civil War battle in Oklahoma, fought by black, Indian and white troops on both sides. The battle’s heroes were men of the 1st Kansas Colored Volunteers--the first black regiment to be organized for the Union. Features graveled walking trails with wayside interpretive exhibits. Primitive hiking trails and camp sites are currently under development. The visitors' center interpretive exhibits feature arms and equipment, and biographical histories of participants. A book store features Civil War related books, postcards, t-shirts and souvenirs. Reenactments of the July 17, 1863 battle are held every 3 years by the Oklahoma Historical Society. Reservations required for groups wanting guided tour, and also required for individuals during annual candlelight tours. Admission fee may apply during special events at site.
