Japanese in Hawaii: Continuity and Change
Japanese in Hawaii: Continuity and Change — Japanese in Hawaii: Continuity and Change Produced by the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii for the exhibition Okage Sama De Director and Camera: Clinton Uyehara Five themes, Americanization, Freedom to Choose, The Samurai, Roles, and Hawaiian Japanese, explore human values and critical issues of continuity and change in Hawaii. While the themes are centered on being Japanese in Hawaii, the messages are relevant to all immigrant groups who left their homeland. We came as imin, immigrants. We have become kamaaina, born of the land. We have been guided by manyJapanese and non-Japanese, individuals as well as groups, leaders, and common people. The issei came as Japanese and remained Japanese in a foreign land. The nisei grew up as Japanese Americans and were forced to prove their equality as Americans. The sansei grew up American. Confident of themselves as Americans, the sansei, yonsei, and gosei generations are comfortable in their search for ethnic identity, but they take pride in being local. For all who live here together we find that our local customs differ from those of our immigrant ancestors. In Hawaii, where many ethnic groups live together, we have learned to appreciate the cultures of others and share our own culture. In the process we all are changed and enriched. We are thankful to alland we are thankful for being a part of Hawaii.
