History of Congressional Pages
From the origins of the page system in 1774 through the period in the 1940s when Congress demonstrated an indifference towards the needs of providing the boys with supervised living arrangements, to modern scandals, congressional pages have had a storied history. Darryl Gonzalez provides an account in a new book about the history of the congressional pages, both boys and girls, who have served Congress for more than 200 years. This presentation in Ketcham Hall of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Building in Washington, D.C., on March 9, 2011, was part of the U.S. Capitol Historical Society’s noon Brown Bag Book-Signing Lecture Series.
