Indian fashion designer Ritu Kumar says the fact that her peers can create both a lungi and a dress, highlights the country's resilience and offers the region a competitive edge. As more fashion houses continue to outsource, Kumar says this is not due to lower costs but rather exemplifies how multi-dexterous India has become. As designers are heading over to India, several of Kumar's garments were first seen in New York City, Sept. 24 and 25. Kumar and fellow designers, including Wendell Rodricks, are in the U.S. for Incredible India@ 60, an initiative commemorating India's 60th anniversary as an independent state.
