Early flood stages in Minot, ND
iReport — The mouse river that runs through Minot, ND is going to flood the town of Minot, ND starting on June 22 and cresting at record levels around June 29. The river will get much higher than has ever been seen since recorded history, a massive 7 feet higher. Mandatory evacuation orders have been ongoing and this is now the second round of them, the "big one". With flooding going on in Canada, the areas downstream of the Des Lacs River are being swamped with excessive water caused by constant heavy rain (and more rain is in the forecast over the next week). This leads into the Lake Darling Dam. A massive release of water to come on Wednesday (amounting to nearly 21,000 cubic feet per second) is going into the Mouse River, of which runs through Minot, ND. This huge surge of water is what’s causing the flooding. In preparation to all this, I've been seeing a lot of sand bags. Dikes were being built. Now, the extra 3 feet for the dikes is nowhere near enough to hold back what is coming and in one known case, a dike has burst. This historic flooding will displace about 15,000 to 20,000 residents (estimated) and could destroy roughly 3000 houses, even submerging some in water that one may only see the roof of the house. This video shows what things were like before the release of water, before the flooding. Notice how the water is touching the bottom of the bridge?
