Gas saving tip top 10, number 9 tip
We’ve been running down a list of gas saving myths and the next item on our checklist will help your Miles Per Gallon. That is if you do it... but it can cause bigger problems in the long run. Everyone agrees that properly inflating your tires is important and can do wonders for fuel efficiency. Under inflated tires reduce fuel economy by a lot, so it is important to keep your tires inflated at all times. But what happens when you over inflate your tires? The truth is, you will get slightly more MPGs driving on a set of over inflated tires... because less of the treads will touch the road, and thus create less friction. But the problem with this practice is that less tread hitting the road also means you have less grip on the pavement for braking and turning. That friction does more than just reduce your fuel economy... it keeps you from getting into major accidents. So really, you might gain a mile per gallon or so by driving on over inflated tires, but you also run a much higher risk of getting into a serious accident. The money you will save on gas is less than the money you will spend if you get into an accident.
