The Business of Mattel’s Barbie Doll
In this video we look at the business of Barbie, aka. Barbara Millicent Roberts. Inspired by her daughter Barbara, Ruth Handler created Barbie and suggested the idea to her husband Elliot, a co-founder of the Mattel toy company. With two Barbie dolls sold every second of every day, Barbie is the most successful doll ever. Launched at the 1959 International Toy Fair for $3, Barbie initially sold over 351,000 units in its first year in the market. With over 1 billion units sold since 1959, Barbie is the # 1 selling doll of all time and a cultural icon; inspiring over 70 designers including Calvin Klein, Gucci and Versace. Totally Hair Body - launched in 1992 - remains its most popular doll, with 10 million units sold in three years (1992-95). In recent years, Mattel faced heightened competition from MGA Entertainment’s Bratz dolls, but in 2008, it won a copyright infringement lawsuit. Today, over 90% of girls aged 3 to 10 years own a Barbie doll.
