Famous Moai statues in high demand
The Moai statues that have helped Easter Island, Chile, draw a growing number of tourists to this remote island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, are so sought after that Chilean authorities were considering sending them on a tour over seas. But the world’s fascination with these stone sculptures of unknown origin isn’t a clean cut affair. The statue that was destined to travel to the Tuileries in France in late April is grounded after opposition from almost 90% of islanders. And the boom of people visiting the statues where they stand, is increasingly putting the small Chilean outpost’s fragile ecosystem at risk. Duration: 02:03
