PrimeTime Politics There are strong suggestions that Canada’s military role in Afghanistan will continue beyond the July 2011 combat deadline imposed by a parliamentary motion. NATO allies are reportedly lobbying Ottawa to supply several hundred soldiers to train Afghan security forces. We replay Defence Minister Peter MacKay’s closing news conference at the Halifax International Security Forum, where he said the government is considering the option. Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff also comments on this latest development. Transport Minister Chuck Strahl announces new airport security measures in Ottawa. Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff deliver remarks to the Ottawa Conference on Combating Antisemitism, an international gathering on Parliament Hill. Harper’s speech suggested that support for Israel may have cost Canada a seat on the United Nations Security Council. Ignatieff said a distinction must be made between legitimate criticism of Israeli policies and hate speech that denies Israel’s right to exist.
