Digital Tipping Point: computer science student Josh Abraham 02 (2004)
This is one of many short video segments which will be added to the Digital Tipping Point (DTP) archive. In this segment, Josh Abraham recounts his memories of preparing web pages using Linux (GNU/Linux) on a 486 as opposed to using Notepad under Microsoft Windows. He says that he was able to keep 12 console terminal windows open under Linux, which made his work much faster than under Microsoft Windows. He says that it helped him adjust to life as a freshman in high school, because he was able to impress upper classman with his Linux knowledge. He says that Linux became popular with the computer club, which was an important social organization for him. (Watching this segment reminds me how crucially important it is for teenagers to feel a sense of belonging. You can really see how GNU/Linux was an important tool to help this young man fit into high school. I can’t emphasize sufficiently that this is not a film about technology. This is a film about how important community is for human beings).
