Michelle Obama Speech to Young Women in Soweto
First Lady Michelle Obama spoke to young African women leaders at Regina Mundi Church in Soweto, where an uprising began in June, 1976. That protest is considered the start of the movement that led to the end of apartheid in South Africa in 1994. Mrs. Obama compared the anti-apartheid struggle in South Africa with the U.S. civil rights movement, and called on the young women in the audience to become leaders in their communities and work for change.
