Worst Earthquake on Record to Hit Japan
(Al Jazeera News Headlines: March 11, 2011) Hundreds of people have been killed in the worst earthquake to hit Japan since records began. The 8.9 magnitude quake struck off the country’s northeastern coast triggering a 23-foot tsunami, which put the entire Pacific region on alert. It's estimated around 10 billion worth of damage has been caused, although the full scale of destruction is not yet clear. Japan has also been hit by a series of strong aftershocks. In Libya, conflict continues over Colonel Moammar Gaddafi's leadership. Fighting has taken place in Ras Lanuf, though it is unclear which side has control over the oil town. A UN humanitarian mission is expected to arrive in Libya on Saturday.
