The Comfort Of Routine
Turner’s video’s capture usually busy and populated locations at a time when they are completely void of human activity, allowing the viewer to notice the details they may, at busier times, tend to miss. Referring to the relentless cycles and routines we encounter through our daily lives, Turner is interested in the way this can make many oblivious to some of the more important things around them. The lack of human population can create a rather melancholic eeriness but also a calming and thought provoking experience. “The new piece is a little different to my previous work. Instead of focusing on urban environments I have started to become interested by empty tourist attractions. The depopulation of these locations allows us to question what they are really worth when there is no interaction or distraction from the crowds. What I become aware of through the depopulation of activity within this environment is how dependent the animals have become upon us. There is sadness in the fact that we have forced routine upon these animals but it also becomes obvious that ultimately for the animals there is great comfort to be found in this daily cycle.” (Text taken from the press release of the Parfitt Gallery Skyline Project screening) Shot on both Canon 7D & Canon HV30
