World Music: Dadawa, "In the Setting of the Sun"
(China) This is right up there as one of the most artful and beautiful videos in our collection. Dadawa is from Guangzhou Guangdong, in China. Her first recording in 1995 "Sister Drum" was an international success. She has only recently come out with another CD, "Seven Days" (from which this song comes) after a nine year hiatus. Comparisons have been made to Enya, to Bjork, and even to Ry Cooder, owing to her interest in the music of other cultures. While the melody and lyrics of "In the Setting of the Sun" are almost nursery rhyme-like in structure, the arrangement and production is extremely skillful. The visual treatment reflects this simultaneous experience of simplicity and sophistication.
